Disability Equality Scheme
The Disability Discrimination Act 1995, amended by the Disability Discrimination Act 2005, places a statutory general duty on all public authorities to promote disability equality.
The 2005 Act provides a legislative framework which requires public bodies to pay due regard to promoting equality for disabled people in every area of their work and to actively promote disability equality.
As part of this statutory duty, the Authority is required to produce a Disability Equality Scheme, which sets out how the Authority will promote disability equality.
The Constabulary is also required to produce a Disability Equality Scheme which will be monitored by the Authority.
The Authority's Action Plan, contained within its Scheme, will be regularly reviewed and updated, to ensure that the document remains appropriate to the needs of both the organisation and the communities it serves. In addition to this, updates on work against the action plan will be included in the diversity report considered by the Authority on a quarterly basis.
