Race Equality

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a statutory duty on all public authorities to have due regard to the need to:-

  • eliminate unlawful racial discrimination;
  • promote equality of opportunity; and
  • promote good relations between persons of different racial groups.

In addition to this general duty, the Act also imposes a number of specific duties on certain public authorities. These specific duties apply to the Authority and include the need to assess functions and policies, consult on and monitor the impact that policies are likely to have on the promotion of race equality and publish the results of these assessments, consultations and monitoring arrangements.

The Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 places a statutory duty on the Authority to publish the details as to how it intends to meet its obligations under the Act in the form of a Race Equality Scheme.

Publication of this Scheme represents a very significant step forward in our desire to achieve race equality within the Authority. It is not, however, the end of the process; rather it is the start of a new phase.

The Authority has worked hard to ensure that race equality is at the heart of all policies, procedures and functions. This Race Equality Scheme will provide a framework that will allow this activity to continue and ensure that the statutory duty to promote race equality is achieved.

The Authority has recently reviewed its Scheme, together with the associated Action Plan, and made a number of amendments.
